Our lives, as explained in this chapter, can be described as many things. Different metaphors are used to express our perception of life. Some people think of it as a game (which makes them focus on 'winning'), some people think it's a roller coaster, or race. The thing is, how you see your life reflects on how you value your life. For example if you see your life as a party, then you will focus yourself on having fun. And we all know earthly 'having fun' is not godly at all.
Thus we need to stop for a while, read the bible, and understand life the way the bible sees it: life on earth is a test, and trust.
Life on earth as test means that our life is filled with different kinds of trials and tests from God. He wants to know our true heart, our true colors. What would we do when He seems to be so far away from us? What would we do when it seems like He's not answering our prayers? But when we overcome this tests and trials, our characteristics develop to be better.
Life on earth is trust means whatever we have right now are God given. And that is why we need to use them wisely. It's like the story of the master who gave his three workers talents. It is up to us to develop our 'talents', and whatever we do, no matter how successful we are, the talents belong to God, and not ours. We must not be consumed by our possessions. Instead we have to be responsible and realise at all times that what He has given, He can take it back. Anytime.
I see life as a stage. I think each person has their own roles and function. It's quite different from what the way bible sees it, but somehow, I think, there are some fundamental principle that goes along with it. I always think God puts everyone in the right place, because He knows this is the perfect role for us. And that's why we need to play our part with our best, and not focusing on others' roles.
So if you think your life is worthless, or you don't like it, take a step back. Observe. Think about it. Maybe you want someone else's life. Maybe you want others' talents. But what if you take a look at yourself, and find out your own talent, focusing on it, and keep on doing what you're good at, not on what you wish you were good at. It is better to master one thing fully than to know a little bit of everything. ;)
Verse to remember:
'Unless you are faithful in small matters, you won't be faithful in large ones.' (Luke 16:10a, NLT)
And whenever you are put on trials, take heart. For God is with you, all the time.
